Type is talking in a visual form

Kerning –Precise, useful term in 3 places

            -Space between each letter

            -The letters equally spaced

            -How to work out the space

            -Rectangle box between each letter

To work it out finf the largest space between the letters

Leave the kerning at zero, then change everywhere else. Never negative kern

Top word is the original, the bottom is the one that the Kerning has been changed

Biggest space is between the PH

How do you break a sentence into two lines?

You would break a line you would need to separate  the line where the pause would be when spoken.

Either of the bottom two would work effectively 

Learning to follow what your eyes look at is very important. Everyone looks at the same thing

Culture to read from left to right

However to present info through the layout in a different way using hierarchy organising info with what is more important to be seen first.

Hierarchy is really important in presenting information

Try and get one, two, three and four read in that order on the page, adjusting the point size, weight, kerning and positioning on the page

Then using the same words try and get it so you read four, three, two and one by not changing the point size or weight.

Change the direction the words are laid out. 

Eyes are lazy don't read words that may be the wrong way round

Font 'Benbo' has no X height or a really small x height

No columned page-Not readable 10-12 words maximum in a line of text. When its too long makes it harder to read. When your heads moving cant find the next line as you follow the white space.

Using a two column looks more intelligent to read because it looks as if its hard to read. You see the columns out there in the world

 One column and four columns looks to be more the least intelligent, column width is too small, you tend to see them in newspapers.

Two columns are seen in novels and books, most thought through so it is ultimately more intelligent

This is the symbol in Indesign that allows you to put your text into columns

All the text is the same,m however by the way it looks you can see and make people think it its intelligent when maybe the text itself might not be.

To get two columns to fit a page. Consider changing the

Point size-Increase the size, however this comes across as patronising

-Margin

-Leading-Help some one read more white space

-Font

Crate an indent or decrease or increase the line space to create more white space.

Indent button and delete the spaces you gain more space

If you centre the text the uneven white space makes it harder to read

Centred-Makes it harder to read

Left alignment- harder to read

Justifying the text gives you more space, reduces the space between the words. Straight lines and grid

To create space always try and add leading

12pt would be 14 leading

13pt would be 15 leading etc. Never falls odd so 12pt would never use a 13 leading

Most novels 8-8.5 pt size

Legal size for small print is 6pt
