Concept- To create a visually informative ticket with packaging that is sent out to customers who have bought tickets to go see 'Othello'
With regards to the info you get about shows particular theatre shows you tend to get them in a standard letter with maybe a booklet off information from cast members to up and coming shows, basically and advertisement ploy, and normally you wouldn't normally pay much attention too. Therefore i wanted to create a visual item that was interesting to the viewer but also beneficial. Below are the images of my progress in developing my final piece.
From my research I decided to go with a hexagon shapes, purely because it allowed me to have 6 sections with info big enough without the information to be illegible, it also allowed me to have the ticket in the middle.
Quick sketches of ideas
Here i experimented with different ways i could present my programme along with the ticket being attached. This way you could send it to the customer then they are less likely to forget the vital information if its part of the ticket.
When developing I created a mind map to remind me off the research i had done so my development stayed relevant.
Once i was certain on the shape, the front cover made it hard. I had spent a lot of time looking at the previous book covers and posters and i wanted to do something simple yet affective and still appropriate. Instantly i thought about doing a silhouette below is the design i originally drew, however i didn't want it to be quite so literal, plus this design is too modern in my eyes. It didn't quite fit what i wanted to portray.
Below are a few examples of text ideas. I wanted to show a divide between the two sides purely because there was a massive divide within the play, i also included the colour red because this could indicate blood, anger, violence, death etc. In the end i decided to not go with this idea and develop my idea above further.
Mock ups
To start off with i needed to be sure that what i had designed would actually work so i went on to make my first mock up. This was just a smaller version of what i wanted the outside to look like.
As it stands this image is of when the info envelope is folded out. On the insides the info would be on the back of the flaps so you wouldn't be able to see anything except the people on the front.
Below is an image of what it would look like when its all folded up.
Turned over and opened out
The back when its all sealed and tucked away.
Side view. Due to the design being quite bendy when all the slots are folded together this would allow there to be room for more then one ticket.
Printed mock up.
As you can see i went for quite neutral colours, i didn't want anything too over the top and in your face. I wanted it to look quite serious as this is a very serious play. I decided to use illustrator to create my designs and with in this i used the pen tool to draw out the faces. Unlike the above mock up i didn't want there to be any over lapping on to the folds at the back as once all folded the shapes would be all miss matched so it was important to create my layers correctly but to also use the pencil tools rubber to erase the lines that over run.
To show it is a theatre show i decided to put a spot light shining over the man and women's face to emphasise that this is a theatre show. To create an interest look i cut part of the 'O's in Othello off the page purely because it is still readable and legible with them being cut slightly. I also believe it gives the design a modern edge which contrasts nicely with the simplistic San-serif font used.
Below image i experimented with the spot light going behind the imagery.
The spotlight going in front of the image, by lowering the opacity it gives it more of a look as if its a spot light, but this is also emphasizing the divide that happens between the two people with in this play. I don't have an image however i spent a lot of time experimenting with more then one spot light, and there locations, whether they should cross over or shine in different directions. I kept it simple with one design purely because it made the overall look, look too much and it was quite distracting.

Inside
Admittedly when designing the inside with info graphics i struggled the most with purely because i wasn't sure how an info graphic should look like.
I started off with putting the information i had wanted on the packaging first, starting with facts, a quote from the film, a quick detail about the plot, seating plan, a quote from the press and some information on the major themes.
Below is the image of the package being opened displaying the ticket in the middle.
The theater i had chosen to do was 'West Yorkshire Playhouse' so i went on there website to find out information about there theatre. I came across a diagram of their seating plan, however it was just a black and white pixelated version so i decided to re design the seating plan so it was more clear, giving each section a colour code.
Above, even though the ticket does have the seating plan on there but just in case you loose your ticket once in there or for a more detailed look i put it again on the flaps.
Brief info on William Shakespeare and the play along with the major themes. I carried on with the theme of having some of the letter falling off the page.
Quote within the play along with info about the plot.
I used a culmination of white text along with black text because these two colours contrasted the beige quite well and stood out so it was readable and legible still.
The ticket section, i originally had no border around the edges but it looked as if there was too much empty space so i decided to create a film role going around the triangle. To create the oval i did this in a darker brown with white text and then cut out the rounded edge so the ticket would sit comfortably.
The back of the ticket, has the seating plan on there but also the bottom section is the part in which the ticket collector would tear off and keep then you would keep the rest.

When designing this part, i realized that if i scored the oval it would then cut through onto the front image, therefor to avoid this issue i printed out the middle section separately so i could score it and then stick it over the top. Next time however i will bare this in mind if i am using this technique because it does affect the aesthetics of the design.

With ticket
Ticket- I decided to put the same image that was on the cover on the ticket, however i lowered the opacity quite a lot just so you could see the text that is written over the top. The bottom section is the part which is pulled off by the ticket collector and then the customer keeps the top half.
Inside
Overall i am quite pleased with my end product. Even though due to printing alignment issues along with not even precision when folding i am pleased with this, and i will know for next time to rectify this issue. I also had a fault because as i was using quite thick white stock i thought it would be quite difficult in getting an accurate fold, so i used a craft knife to gently score one of the sides, however as it didn't cut through it did rip the top layer of paper off, which i was disappointed at. There for next time ill re think how i would create neater folds.
