OUGD406 InDesign

Brief: You have been given a subject matter and you are required to produce a visually considered double page spread based on it. The content for the double page spread will be gathered from your research and investigation about this animal. The purpose, tone and audience are to be determined by you. The article must have 500 words and contain at least three images.

Subject Matter - OSTRICH

InDesign setting up the layout.
To work to the requirement of the brief with regards to setting up the page, I needed to be aware of the sizes. (237x380)  As it is a double page spread when setting up I needed to put in 237mm in height and 190mm in width. Change the number of pages to 2, Tick the box for Facing pages. Also add a 3mm bleed.
This is what my page looked like when I pressed Ok. As this is a single page it wouldn't be helpful when designing because it needs to be a double page spread, and its important that the style and layout is consistent.
Below is the page layout options section which gives you the view of how your pages are set up. This set up is not appropriate for me.
I needed to add an additional page to allow my pages to be side by side. The middle button along the bottom of the links page adds an additional page.

Creating Guides. It is important to have guides when designing because layout is important. So to do this on my page i need to go to Layout- Ruler guides and it will bring up the below image. This will allow me to divide my page up with rows and columns, with a certain size gutter between them. You also have the option to fit guides to the page edge or the margins.

Below is what my final page layout looks like.

After showing my peers my design so far, the feedback was positive.
This is what people had said in the crit:
'Has a strong composition, the larger image works well and the eye is being moved around all of the double page spread'
'Strong imagery and identity, Lovely font and colour scheme'
Really effective. I like the how the colours are from the image! Only thing, bring the white text away from the edge!'
'Balanced layout and design. Good colour scheme, relates well to image to animal. Use of columns and pastel colours make the spread look formal and sophisticated. Include another image for the 3 image minimum.'
'Needs one more image to fulfil the brief. Like colour scheme. Copy perhaps a bit too big? Ostriches head is right at the top of the page might need some space.'
'The composition is really professional, Well shaped text around image, well laid out heading/subheading. (Brief require 3 images)
'Think the ostrich heading colours works well with the photograph. Think the page numbers with border work well. Looks clean and tidy even though there is a lot of information.'
'Love the use of colours and the full image on the left page. Like the use of white text on image. Maybe use another image as indesign brief says a minimum of 3 images.'
'Strong balanced layout, Good use of text and image picking out certain colours for the header. Strong image.'
'Looks like you pulled it straight out of a magazine. Is the Africa Geographic even real?'

I was happy with the comments, I am pleased that my peers had noticed the colour scheme i had gone for as i did use the colour picker tool from the left hand image to use as the header text. As at this point it wasn't finished yet i hadn't yet put in the third image so that is understandable as to why that was brought to my attention.

This is the final double page spread on an Ostrich:
