OUGD406 Communication is a Virus

Today we made a presentation to Simon and Amber explaining our concept. The feedback we got was that we had a strong concept but due to the fact that next stage of the brief would require us to fulfill our brief in real life we now need to rethink our concept slightly to be feasible to do.

We have been given a blank brief to complete and on Monday present to Amber.

Prior to writing the brief we felt it necessary to readdress the initial considerations that would form our concept. We discussed how we could still use some of all the work we have all done and decided to just alter our concept slightly.

Concept:

To create a blog supported by social media that will promote the benefits of tea and create a discussion forum amongst tea drinkers

What do you want to say?

We want to make people aware of the benefits of tea and create a social forum where people can share and discuss their tea experiences.

How do you intend to say it?

By offering advice, hints, share experiences, recommendations

What language would be appropriate?

We want to communicate a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere through the use of informal and friendly language.

Will the content be communicated primarily through type or image?

We will use both type and image. Due to the limited colour palette the type will have to compliment the images to communicate our message.

What are you aiming to achieve?

We want people to share experiences and advice, create a forum where like minded tea drinkers can chat and enjoy being part of an online community.

After we had adjusted our concept we were now ready to write our brief.

Prior to our presentation of our brief to Amber we looked into names again to double check that we could use "My Tea". Unfortunately it was taken and after searching on some other ideas we eventually came down to "Your Tea". Kirsty proceeded to set up the blog and we now have the following details in place:
  • Blog address: yourtea.wordpress.com
  • Email address: yourteablog@gmail.com
  • Twitter name: @yourteablog

After we had seen Amber and explained what we were working on now which she seemed to think was good with some realistic opportunities to get people to interact.

OUGD404 What is a book- Part 2

Grids and Divine proportions

Canons and grids week 2

Van de Graaf.. A gridded page is much like scaffolding is for a building.
It is a structure that elements can be organized.
A grid will help continually....

The Van de Graaf canon is a historical reconstruction of a historical reconstruction of a method that may have been used in book design to divide a page in pleasing proportions

The consruction of Van de Graafs Canon, works for any...

Symmetrical layout is used still to this day in literature because when you read a book its so your fingers dont cover the words that you are reading.

Leading a very brief overview
Column width is more then just design or format
It is based on legibility
Printed collateral (text) is read by the eye of a distance of 30-35cm
According to emperial rule there should be 7 words per line for any length
To keep the type area light and open (in appearence) we must consider the leading

Overlong text lines tire the eye out, as do over short ones, readers first find overlong lines strenuous to read
This is because it uses too much energy...
The key is the ease of reading
Text must not impour the rythm of reading
This can not apply to titles and subtitles
Advertisings functions require headings to standout and be absorbed by the eye.
If function is to sell
Are columns just aesthetic creatures?

Margin Proportions
Margins can have a influence on the overall feel of a page of print
Too small- Looks overfull
TooLarge- Exageration
Well balanced margins on the sides
Head and tail cam crwate an agreeble

Badly Proportional 1x1x1x3
Side margins can never generate an interestin page
try generate the impression of inclussion and dullness
Well Proportioned
Indented to be the right hand page due to larger left margins
More applicable to literature rather than advertising etc.
the margins are luxurious

Well is it still all just about aesthetics?
The type area ! no really
1 and 2 grid columns

Think about is there a deffinate rule on how grids, layout, columns, margins work?

Colour code of the drawing
Dark Red-Rule of thirds
Orange-Fibernacci
Green and purple- Canon

OUGD404- What is a Book Part 1

Unfortunatley I missed this session due to being poorly, So the notes below are coutesy of Sarah.

Today we began to look at the contents of a book and how a book is built. The Fibonacci sequence is used to format pages so that they are proportional.
The fibonacci sequence appears in nature, as it does the human scale, and is considered the perfect sequence for correct proportion.
The Fibonacci sequence ratio is 8:13.

0+1 = 1
1+2= 3
2+3= 5
3+5= 8
5+8= 13
8+13= 21
13+21= 34
21+34= 55
34+55= 89

Why do the proportions work in the way they do? Articulate the golden ratio.

We then to create our own physical versions of the golden ratio. Drawing a square, doubling the square number 1, and placing it on top of the original square, take the size of these two shapes put together and placing it to the left hand side, this system is repeated and the squares added in a clockwise manner, following the spiral shape in which the sequence would create.

We then created another physical version working in the opposite manner, take a piece of paper and diving the longest side, by 1.62 - the golden number, creating a square and a rectangle. taking the rectangle again and diving the longest side again by 1.62 to create a new square and rectangle etc.

Rule of third.
The golden ratio can be simplified in the rule of thirds. This gives the ability to find points of interest quickly. Divide image into 3 columns and rows to give 9 boxes. the centre box, more so the 4 corners of the centre box is where the eye naturally looks.

Designers use the grid produced by the rule of thirds to determine where important piece of information are placed.

OUGD406- Communication is a Virus

OUGD406 - Communication Is A Virus

Today we told each other our ideas, and was really happy with what people had come up with. We clarified some things and decided on what to say in tomorrow's crit, which Jane wrote down:

Concept:
Create your own unique tea blend according to your mood. Tell other people about it, tweet it, drink it in or buy bulk to take home.

We will create a tea room which has lots of different flavoured tea available.

There will be a strong message promoting the healthy benefits of drinking tea instead of coffee.

Unique selling point:
Create your own personalised flavoured tea.

What do you want to say?
A new contemporary take on tea that promotes the benefits of drinking tea and exploring new flavour combinations.

How do you intend to say it?
We intend to create a contemporary brand that will target professionals and encourage them to explore the flavours of the world or create their own tea blend.
We want to utilise Twitter in a creative way to distribute the message to the masses and engage potential customers.

What language would be appropriate?
We want to communicate a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere through the use of informal and friendly language.

Will the content communicated primarily through type or image?
We will use both type and image. Due to the limited colour palette the type will have to compliment the images to communicate our message.

What are you aiming to achieve?
To build a brand that will introduce customers to international tea, creating an appreciation for different flavours that are unique to our brand and not readily available elsewhere.

We want to develop "the new place to be" and make customers feel part of our company.

We want people to talk about their unique tea and general experience whilst spreading the word.

We identified 6 key areas to start working on in order to cover the brief which were as follows:

Distribution channels (James):
How will we get people to talk about us, spread the word

Packaging (Danielle):
What kind of packaging will we provide for people to bring their loose tea home in
cups, mugs for drinking in?

Tea room layout (Sophie):
How will we display the "blend your own tea area" within the tea room and how do we communicate the message?

Products: Tea Flavours and health benefits from drinking the tea (Kirsty):
Research flavours that we should include and find out about the benefits from drinking it.
Think about how they could be illustrated.
Food that complements the different tea flavours.

Branding & Identity (Priyesh):
Name, Logo, colour schemes

Promotional (Jane):
Reward or loyalty scheme to keep customers coming back
Any other promotional activities to raise awareness.

OUGD406 InDesign

Brief: You have been given a subject matter and you are required to produce a visually considered double page spread based on it. The content for the double page spread will be gathered from your research and investigation about this animal. The purpose, tone and audience are to be determined by you. The article must have 500 words and contain at least three images.

Subject Matter - OSTRICH

InDesign setting up the layout.
To work to the requirement of the brief with regards to setting up the page, I needed to be aware of the sizes. (237x380)  As it is a double page spread when setting up I needed to put in 237mm in height and 190mm in width. Change the number of pages to 2, Tick the box for Facing pages. Also add a 3mm bleed.
This is what my page looked like when I pressed Ok. As this is a single page it wouldn't be helpful when designing because it needs to be a double page spread, and its important that the style and layout is consistent.
Below is the page layout options section which gives you the view of how your pages are set up. This set up is not appropriate for me.
I needed to add an additional page to allow my pages to be side by side. The middle button along the bottom of the links page adds an additional page.

Creating Guides. It is important to have guides when designing because layout is important. So to do this on my page i need to go to Layout- Ruler guides and it will bring up the below image. This will allow me to divide my page up with rows and columns, with a certain size gutter between them. You also have the option to fit guides to the page edge or the margins.

Below is what my final page layout looks like.

After showing my peers my design so far, the feedback was positive.
This is what people had said in the crit:
'Has a strong composition, the larger image works well and the eye is being moved around all of the double page spread'
'Strong imagery and identity, Lovely font and colour scheme'
Really effective. I like the how the colours are from the image! Only thing, bring the white text away from the edge!'
'Balanced layout and design. Good colour scheme, relates well to image to animal. Use of columns and pastel colours make the spread look formal and sophisticated. Include another image for the 3 image minimum.'
'Needs one more image to fulfil the brief. Like colour scheme. Copy perhaps a bit too big? Ostriches head is right at the top of the page might need some space.'
'The composition is really professional, Well shaped text around image, well laid out heading/subheading. (Brief require 3 images)
'Think the ostrich heading colours works well with the photograph. Think the page numbers with border work well. Looks clean and tidy even though there is a lot of information.'
'Love the use of colours and the full image on the left page. Like the use of white text on image. Maybe use another image as indesign brief says a minimum of 3 images.'
'Strong balanced layout, Good use of text and image picking out certain colours for the header. Strong image.'
'Looks like you pulled it straight out of a magazine. Is the Africa Geographic even real?'

I was happy with the comments, I am pleased that my peers had noticed the colour scheme i had gone for as i did use the colour picker tool from the left hand image to use as the header text. As at this point it wasn't finished yet i hadn't yet put in the third image so that is understandable as to why that was brought to my attention.

This is the final double page spread on an Ostrich:

OUGD406 Design is about doing

Live Brief: Secret 7"
You need people to see your work and the essence of Graphic design is Communication. There is no value producing work for it to be placed in a draw. Often the best work or best ideas are the ones that people have see. You must get to use to distributing your work at the any available opportunity.

Secret 7" is a project that combines music and art. After their success in 2012 the team are back with a new line up of artists, a new set of tracks and a new charity partner.

Brief

Secret 7" are inviting creatives from around the globe to take inspiration from one of the tracks from the artists below and design an original 7 inch vinyl sleeve. The sleeve must not feature the name of the artist or title of the track.
