OUGD406 Communication is a Virus..

BA(Hons) Graphic Design
OUGD406
Level 4
Brief Title:
Communication is a virus…
Response to the self-evaluation process should be posted to your blog.
As a group what problem did you identify and why (In response to Drink Tea)
As a group we mis-understood the brief, we came up of a concept of creating our own tea company with a tea café, and how we would make it trendier. We had decided that it would be a café in which the customer chose and made their own flavour of tea. However we had a presentation meeting with the tutors which it was then brought to our attention we had got it all wrong. Therefore we went back to think of a new idea which was how we could make drinking tea go viral and be seen to be a young drink rather than the stereotypical view of it being for elderly people.

What methods ddi you use to gather your evidence to prove this was a problem and what forms did it take? (Categorize your research using terms primary, secondary, quantitative and qualitative)
The majority of the research was secondary research done through the internet and watching videos on youtube about people being interviewed about tea. This also gave us peoples opinions on Tea as well.
What methods of research did you find useful and why ?
I found the most interesting research I did was watching the clips on Youtube because these people on there were passionate about Tea and it meant something to them so I knew then that it would be the truth.
What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?
We should have made a questionare to give to people about tea. This would have been more useful because the people we would have asked would have ranged in age, which in that sense gives you a whole different set of opinions by all sorts of different people.
How did you manage the workload as part of a group?
As a group I think we worked really well. We did loose inspiration when our original idea had to be re thought due to us all contributing and being passionate about it so when we re grouped we assigned tasks for each person to fulfil. And then when it came to creating the video we all worked together to make it.

OUGD404 Grids

OUGD404 Ten Things you need to know about Graphic Design Final Article

For my Ten things you need to know about Graphic design i decided to create a book. I decided that to make it consistent I would have a colour theme of a white stock and grey and orange. For this design I took on a minimalist aproach.

To start with I had decided to keep the left hand side pages the same running through and vary the style on the left to show a wider range of page layouts.

This page is about using Bold as body copy. On the left is a brief statement then on the right it has some more information a long with an example of body copy in bold. This would probably be one of the best layouts with in the book, just because it varys in the amount of columns it displays and contrasts nicely with the two smaller columns. Proportionally I think they work really well.
This page was about Legibility, because the majority oft he info was on the right hand side i decided to just have my two examples on the right. This page isnt one of my favourites however it contrasts well with the other pages. I dont think it works aswell due to the colours I have used as the red and green doesnt work well with the orange, but the whole point was about emphasising how illegible it was.

These pages are about RGB, I kept in mind the circuler theme running through having the three colours shaped as circles, colour wise it works better because the colours go nicely with the grey. I wanted to have one thin long column against a wide small column.

Same applies to this layout of CMYK, it seemed logical to have these two pages together with a similar laout. Due to there needing to be four coloured circles i Placed them horizontally down the page, not quite central but not right up to the left hand side. Next to it i placed my text.

This page was about the 7 contrasts, I layed it out similarly to the one previously (page 1) because i thought it worked best to display it in a simplified manner, With this page as i couldnt fit all 7 on one page i had decided to do a fold out page (no screen shot) that would fold out the other 2 contrasts of colour.

My seventh page is about grids and layouts. The info is on the left hand side page and the diagram on the right. I got this diagram out of the book that is referenced at the bottom, however i did adapt it to my own work by changing the colours, and the wording.

Page 8 is about semiotics, I used the layout design on the left and placed it on the right with the discription in the middle along with a diagram and information. It was important to have the line up and sizes inline to each other to make it look clean.

Page 9 is about Typography, next to it are the images i found of some interesting tpography to give as a example. The images were found on the internet and the link for them is below it. The only reason there is a link there was because i couldnt find the name of the author who made them.

Page 10 is the golden section, I thought this would be appropriate as i had previousl done a page about grids. Again the diagram was found in the book i had used, but again changed it to meet my design requirments for my book.

It was important for me to include a reference page because i used the two books mentioned for back up and extra information telling people what they needed to know about Graphic Design.

The making of the actual book didnt go as planned. With printing issues as the printer didnt allowed the size i had set, also i wasnt able to print double sided. So in the end when making my book i used normal a4 paper for the pages and then a antique white for the outer book.

OUGD404 Who are you ? The Language of Graphic Design

The task given to us during this session was to choose a Roman or Gothic font. We must have the fonts typed using the phrase 'Who aare you?' three times, one must be the light version, the next regular and another in bold. These also needed to be shown in weights of 24pt, 36pt,72 pt and 144pt. These then need to be cut out into seperate words/ glyphs and brought to the next session. Below are the fonts I used.

Visual Literacy - The language of Graphic design.

'Work the metaphor. Every object has the capacity to stand for something other than what is apparent. Work on what it stands for.'

Visual Metaphor - Used to transfer a meaning from one image to another. Although the images may have no close relationship, a metaphor conveys an impression about something relatively unfamiliar by drawing a comparison between in and something familiar.

Visual synecdoche - This term is applied when a part is used to represent the whole, or vice versa. Quite simply the main subject is substituted for something that is inherently connected to it. - A concrete piece, does not move.

Visual metonym - A symbolic image that is used to make reference to something with a more literal meaning. For example a cross might be used to symbolise a church.

'In trying to separate words from pictures we have to accept that words are pictures of letters' - David Crow.

We laid out our 12 versions of 'Who are you?' on the table. (images above)
We were asked to lay each word out in a different order so that in one sentence was a different weight, or size, once they were all muddled up we had to then say them how you would read them. For example for a bold word you would have to emphasise the word quite loudly because that would be how you would percieve a bold. A bit like how when you read something in capitals you relate it to shouting.
In our groups we had to listen to each other and then work out in what way you would represent what they had said in a sentence.
