How to- Progress Crit- Peer Feedback

Comment on the how clearly the problem has been identified and understood:

Peer 1:

'It's been identified clearly and understood there needed to be some sort of route'

Peer 2:

'I think the problem has been understood- Could it have been identified more precisly by speaking to students.'

Peer 3:

'The problem was clearly identified and easy to understand. The quickest route into leeds has been researched well and the concet of how the directions will be show is well thought out. The project is relevant to students from LCA'

Peer 4:

'Problem:Students getting lost in Leeds. Identified well- Worked out most important route and focused on it. Identified audience (students) problem (lost from town to college) Understood in that they knowhow to discover it. Well identified and understood'

Comment on how well the problem has been analysed and researched:

Peer 1:

'They went on google maps to find he quickest route to use which is helpful, but they didnt do much more research. They could have researched where food places, shops and other important places to go as the final destination because at the moment its Harvey Nichols, which students dont go to and might no know how to get to other places from there. They could have done a questionaire to see if people would post a pictuew of themselves'

Peer 2:

'Would it have been useful to ask some students what kind of route they would prefer.
-The quickest
-Useful route showing useful shopping destinations for students
-'More then one route.'

Peer 3:

'There could have been more research done, also students could have been questioned about other routes and shortcuts that may exist. Ideas were well analysed and the proposed solution will work well.'

Peer 4:

'Researched route to walk and found support info. Analysed way students would walk, how best to deliver info. What to contain info in. How o distribute and promote, how to measure success. Well analysed and researched.'

Comment on the proposed solution to the problem:

Peer 1:

'They decided to create a route by designing stickers and putting them on lamp posts from LCA to town so students can follow them. They also have a leaflet with directions on a QR colde which links to a blog so people can post pictures of themselves to blog at the destination.'

Peer 2:

'Like the idea of ldea of leaflet/map
Good Logo, Great illustration for landmarks
Stickers on route- Is it realistic that you can put on lamp posts etc.Harvey Nichols- For Students?'

Peer 3:

'The propsed solution is to give direction to the students through a map and sticker combination, this solves the problem in a cheap and easy way.'

Peer 4:

'Very clever solution i thought provide on proper map. Easy to read or follow and pysical so can keep, Visual en route aid in the stickers- something visual to follow and make sure your on the right way- Smart. Link to computer interactivity- Blog means can check success on real the basics. Well thought solution'

Comment on the clarity with which the information was presented:

Peer 1:

'They answered all the questions we asked, and got straight to the point. Presentation of what they were doing and why. They had reasons for all the decisions they made.'

Peer 2:

'Straight forward presentation, answered all questions would have been nice to see the logo/leaflet in colour either on screen or mock up rather then sketch only.'

Peer 3:

'The project was presented clearly, I understood the concept and project solution, all information was covered, however one improvement could be everyone in group has equal speaking time when presenting.'

Peer 4:

'Presented briefly but clearly. Not a massively indepth question so limited to answers but considered answers well and explained the thought process and methods of experimentation.I know what they did and didnt need to have to ask to clarify.'

Any other comments or suggestions:

Peer 1:

'Could an app be more helpful to show different destinations? How will the leaflet be advertised? Is it legal?'

Peer 2:

'Would have maybe chosen a more appropriate final destination for students to end up. Somewhere they would go/shop. Not sure if stickers would stay. Could create an app?'

Peer 3:

'Could create an app so you have the route on your smart phone while walking'

Peer 4:

' Make an app/ Link to maps on the barcode, so its even more interactive. Could put homing trackers of points en route and phone recognizes when the user reaches that point.'

How to....

How to get to the city centre from LCA by foot...

24th September 2012- Friday 28th September

Who needs to know? New Students who dont know Leeds very well and Visitors to the College.
What/Why do they need to know? They need to know directions, a map, bus times, how long it takes to get to a certain destination, Landmarks they might pass, certain shops/supermarkets or food outlets perhaps.
How will you tell them? Posters, map, video, images, postcards, GPS, Guided Tour, Apps for your Smart Phone.
Initally our aim would be to Explain, Inform, Instruct and Educate however the main ones would be Inform and Instruct.
What will the audience respond to, where will they look? The audience will hopefully respond positively when they get to the city centre succesfully
How will they need to interact with it? The idea would be to have leaflets available at recpetion and the student union as they would be more accesible to visitors aswell as having leaflets in the freshers LCA welcome pack for new students. Also on leaflet we came up with putting on a qr code which then would take you to an online page either a blog, facebook or twitter page to to show you your route.
How will you know it is working? When people get to the final destination and find the Biggest and last sign we would ask them to take a photo with it and upload it to the internet page. Also if we were to make a facebook page/blog/twitter the page the amount of likes, views or followers would identify that people are using and recognizing this way of direction.
What is the tone of voice? We would like the tone of voice to be friendly and have a funny jokey side however it would need to be quite serious so the people using it know that this is infact a genuine scheme and that they can trust it to get to there destination.

The concept :

The idea behind it after discussing the questions above we came up with the idea of creating a trail with stickers that someone would follow to find their way to the centre. A lot of things now a days have something to do with the internet or apps and allthough we have an internet part of it there is nothing wrong with old fashioned stickers or signs to help you because not everyone has a smart phone. We thought about making a leaflet that would have a simplistic map in there along with simple directions that direct you by what you can see not by saying 'turn right 300 yards etc'

Design Process :

Day 1 : First of all we came together as a group to choose a name that was quick, easy, quirky and rememberable. We also needed it to be a synomim for wandering/walking or trail and we came up and decided to call our how to guide 'Meander'
In our groups we all went away and create a logo or symbol which would form our brand and the thing people would recognize aling the trail.

These are some of the designs:
 Designs by Roxie

Designs by Sophie Abell  (me)

Day 2 : We all got together to show eachother the designs we had done and the different concepts we came up with. As you can see clearly from the above images both me and roxie took completely different routes down the type of logo. Roxie went down the path of arrows and signs by creating a similar logo to the pointer 'Google Maps' use whereas i used footprints for my logo. Out of all the logos everyone did they varied drasticlly which was good because when it came to choosing the final idea we had a lot to choose from.

These are some other designs i did using Adobe Illustrator (above)

From analysing all the different logos we then decded to go with using one of Roxie's designs as it wasnt too literal and it looked fun, fresh and quirky aslong as being quite memborable. We made a few tweaks and (above) is our final logo sticker design. We all were happy with this design.
Colour Scheme: We decided as a group that our colour scheme would be blue and orange as a dark blue matched the college colours and orange was a bright colour which compliments the blue quite well.
The only negative i have about this logo is that it is quite hard to read what it says however if you are following the route its going to be used for quick glances and it isba noticable sign.

Day 3 :

On day three quite a few members of our group were off college poorly however we didnt allow that to fault our work ethic so we got on with creating the leaflet and QR code
We wanted the leaflet to be as simplistic and clean looking as possible as i think leaflets tend to get overloaded with too much information that it  becomes more of a chore to read.

Back Page                                                           Front cover
Inside Pages

Originally the idea was to create maybe a business card size leaflet with just the logo and QR code that would be stuck to the leaflet and users could take it off and keep in there wallet however we decided to keep it simple by keeping them all together plus we would hope that by using this process people wouldnt need to generally keep the leaflet once theyve done the journey a couple of times as they would have learnt it especially if it is a regular route.

On one page we have the simple hand drawn map which has certain shops and places you would pass on your way then on the opposite side we have the very simple directions just to make sure that the user doesnt go of course and finds them self going the wrong way and panicing because they cant see any stickers anywhere.

Next to the directions we included the working QR code which was made on http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ which links to the Meander Facebook page. Initially we had the idea of making a blog although we thought that facebook would be more popular with students and be used more often then a blog.

Day 4:

Unfortunatley i was poorly on this day so i couldnt attend however the group got on well to print off the stickers, set up the facebook page and go out and put the stickers up along the route and take photos.
The final destination was Costa Coffee as it is in the centre and it is a student destination it is also in the middle of everything. The final sticker is a lot bigger then the others and has the facebook group on which is a little bit of advertising. Also we ask that people using the meander trail take photos of them with the final symbol and upload it to the facebook page with feedback so that we can identify if it is working.

(Above) Are the photos of where we had stuck all the stickers along the route as you can see there are many and it obvious places which is good so the user can feel confident that after a couple of yards your gonna be able to see another sticker to tell you you are going in the right direction.

Day 5 :

This day was presentation day where we put together a powerpoint of all things we had done and decided amongst ourselves what each person was going to say to present the work we had done. I think all in all the presentation went well although i think nerves got the better of us and we may not have described what out initial plan was in the end but feedback after was positive.
